Let’s Not Wait Until Our Joints Start Hurting!

Share

Painful wrists, knees, and hip joints are no longer problems affecting only older people. In recent years, this unpleasant type of pain has increasingly started affecting much younger generations as well. However, it must be said that we are often responsible for it ourselves — whether through an unhealthy lifestyle, lack of physical activity, or an improper and unbalanced diet.

There May Be Several Causes

Just as every illness has its cause, painful joints are also the body’s response to external or internal factors. In younger people, joint pain is often caused by overloading the joint through intense exercise or physical activity. Of course, such pain does not always indicate a serious problem. Sometimes it is enough to slow down, reduce training intensity, and listen more carefully to your body. However, joint pain may also have much more serious causes. These often include infections, joint inflammation, fractures, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or even something seemingly harmless like vitamin D deficiency. Each of these conditions requires a different type of treatment. Nevertheless, if we want to support recovery effectively, changing our diet and increasing physical activity are important steps, regardless of the exact cause of the pain.

Prevention Should Start Early in Life

Prevention — a word we hear almost every day nowadays. Sometimes it may seem as if it is slowly losing its importance. Yet early prevention is exactly what can save us from many serious health problems later in life. Just as we begin caring for our skin at a young age because our body gradually produces less hyaluronic acid, we should also pay attention to our joints and cartilage. How? A diet with a low glycemic index, rich in unsaturated fats and high in fiber, can help. In practice, this means eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, legumes, cruciferous vegetables, and using spices such as turmeric and ginger. A healthy lifestyle and proper eating habits from childhood are among the most natural ways to prevent not only joint pain but also many lifestyle-related diseases.

Never Stop Moving

Diet is not the only factor that protects us from many modern health risks. Stress and sedentary work are probably among the biggest contributors to joint and back pain. That is why regular physical activity becomes essential. What activities can help when joint pain begins to appear? The simplest and most natural form of movement is walking. It requires no special equipment or fitness level and can work wonders not only physically but mentally as well. Another excellent option for keeping painful joints active without overloading them is cycling. Exercises such as yoga and Pilates improve flexibility and mobility while strengthening weakened muscles. If none of these activities appeal to you, simply choose movement that suits your preferences and abilities. In summer, swimming is an ideal choice, and when the weather is unfavorable, even regular house cleaning or light gardening can help keep joints moving.

When Prevention Is No Longer Enough

Unfortunately, there are times when it is already too late and exercise or a healthier diet alone are no longer enough to restore a pain-free and active life. In such cases, surgery may become the only solution. Even then, it is worth taking the time to choose experienced specialists, a modern and well-equipped facility, and minimally invasive surgical methods. All of this is provided by the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Medican Clinic in Trnava.
